bottoms up. [homemade margarita w. lime zest]

Though this isn’t a ground breaking recipe, it’d consider it a worthy staple. I never get around to making homemade margaritas, primarily because I always find it much easier to buy margarita mix for large parties.

However, my apartment was overflowing with limes, so I thought it the perfect opportunity to whip up a margarita (instead of using the limes to bake something fattening, which I would normally do).

For the non-drinkers out there, I would still enjoy this drink without the tequila, as it was sweet and refreshing. I added a bit of lime zest to give the drink an extra burst of flavor.

Recipe:

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup water

3/4 cup fresh cold lime juice

1 lime, zested

2 1/2 cups cold water

1/2 cup Camarena tequila, plus more to taste

Ice

Lime wedges, for garnish

Salt, for rim of glass

Directions:

Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over high heat, bring to a boil and cook until the sugar melts, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer simple syrup to a bowl set over a bowl of ice and stir to cool down.

Place the lime juice, zest and water in a bowl, then add the sugar syrup. Add tequila and ice. Salt rim and garnish with lime wedges.

  1. It was after all, National Tequila Day yesterday, so this was very fitting!! I try to stay away from mixes, homemade is just cleaner tasting and this sounds like a perfect mix. Great photos too!

    1. Oh, was it really? I had no idea! Well, that worked out well, huh? I agree, the mixes are too sweet and probably what cause part of the headache the next day. ;)

  2. Mmm, I love sour drinks! Sounds delicious and refreshing…I’ll be making mine without the alcohol tho :)

    1. It was just as delicious without the tequila. I think I drank a glass worth before adding the tequila because I liked it so much!

  3. I’m always a baby when it comes to the salted rim… I always mess it up and end up with too much and it ruins it… Gorgeous pics!

    1. I’m right there with ya. I don’t prefer salt on the rim when I’m ordering a margarita, but figured it’d photograph better for the blog. ;)

  4. Nothing beats a fresh homemade margarita on a sunny hot day…or a cloudy cool day…or a cold rainy day, for that matter. Pretty much any day is a great day for a margarita. Your pictures looks amazing!

  5. I’ve always subscribed to the 3-2-1 recipe of margaritas (3 parts tequila, 2 cointreau, 1 lime, 1 sugar, but I think my guests would stay standing a lot longer if I went with this version!

    1. That sounds like an even better recipe. Sounds delicious, but you’re right, you’d definitely start feeling the effects much quicker!

  6. Margaritas are me & my hubby’s favourite drink – we are so used to our homemade version that we cringe every time we are served a mix at a resto (snobby I know, but there’s no comparison with the fresh lime juice!!) Love this, complete with salty rim – yum! :)

  7. Margaritas made with fresh squeezed lime juice … so so so good. Bottoms up indeed!

  8. I love a good margarita! Especially in the summertime. And now that I think of it, I don’t think I’ve had one all summer. I might just have to fix that. :)

  9. So lovely – love the little “lime-wedging” device too – really cute, I’ve never seen such a thing before. You know, I don’t think I even had a margarita before… at least not a real one. They’re not really so big here as they seem to be in the US. I should remedy that situation ;)

    1. Isn’t it great!? A friend bought that for me for my birthday, and I fell in love with it, especially since I have trouble cutting normal looking wedges. You should have seen the ones I cut this past weekend. Oh wow, really? You should definitely give the drink a try!

  10. What a lovely presentation. It’s also good to know about the gadget. I’m relatively new to your blog and don’t often comment, but I wanted you to know how much I enjoy your blog. You created a lovely spot for your readers to visit and my time here is always well-spent. I hope you have a great day. Blessings…Mary

    1. That gadget has been a life saver ever since a friend bought it for me. Saves that one extra step. I’m so glad you enjoy the site, Mary, that really means a lot, especially since your blog is so great! I love keeping track of your new recipes and posts. Hope you’re having a lovely day! xx
